The Story So Far

The University of California’s Campaign for Transfer Excellence (CTE) is a systemwide initiative designed to improve transfer pathways—particularly for STEM majors—from California Community Colleges (CCCs) to UC campuses.

WHO is this for?

This opportunity is available to all Community College students in need of particular upper-level math courses for their AS degrees and their four-year transfer applications. The courses offered are helpful for students seeking STEM-based four-year degrees in subjects such as mathematics, physics, and engineering.

WHAT does this mean?

UC Merced will offer two of its upper-level mathematics courses (Math 22: Calculus II for Physical Science as well as Math 24: Linear Algebra & Differential Equations) online for CC students over the Summer of 2025. These intensive coursers are designed with transfer students in mind, ensuring the rigor of these critical math courses while also identifying and facilitating the mechanisms and supports that allow for successful transfer from two- to four-year college/university.

WHERE do i take the course?

The courses will be offered through UC Merced and taught on the Canvas learning management system, which is utilized by all public higher education institutions in California.

WHEN is the course?
What IS the cost?

The courses will run during UC Merced’s Summer 2025 term (May 27 – August 15).
For CfTE students, the total cost will be $600 for each math course, which consists of four semester units. The regular cost for a community college student would be $1,992.18. This would consist of a $419 per unit cost for the course fee, as well as a flat $316.18 campus fee. CfTE student applicants may see the full $1,992.18 cost on their bill initially, but they will receive a discount that will cover $1,076 of the unit fees, as well as the $316.18 for campus-based fees.

WHY is there a need??

Transfer between two- and four-year college is one of the cornerstones of public higher education in California, and the CCC and UC systems are committed to recognizing as many opportunities as possible to facilitate this work. There are courses throughout the catalogs of CCs and UCs that are critical to successful degree completion but are not evenly distributed across the state; it may be that a CC does not have that particular course in the catalog, or that it is in the catalog but it only is offered every two years, or that when it is offered it is cancelled due to low enrollment or a difficulty to secure faculty, or that the manner in which the two-year course is offered is not the ideal for the four-year institutions (e.g., some CCs offer Linear Algebra and Differential Equations as two separate courses, but some UCs prefer to see them linked in one course)
